Psychological Safety in Competitive Sports

Swimming is a human activity in which people find, realize, and further develop their individual potential. At best, competitive swimming provides opportunities for personal excellence. At Wisconsin Swimming, we strive to provide all of our members pathways to excellence in and out of the pool. We aim to champion an inclusive and collaborative swim community with FAST Values (Fun, Achievement, Safe/Inclusive, Teamwork).

One way is to create an environment that represents our FAST values is to foster psychological safety. In competitive sport, psychological safety is defined as a climate in which people are comfortable expressing themselves. It is a climate where people feel safe to speak up, make mistakes, and be themselves without fear of embarrassment or punishment.

Sport environments that are psychologically safe, are typically characterized by trust and support. Both trust and support are also crucial for both high performance. Watch our webnars below to find out more.
